MANUKA OIL, NEW ZEALAND

Latin Name:  Leptospermum scoparium
Part of Plant: Leaf
Country of Origin: New Zealand
Method of Production: Steam Distillation

Leptospermum scoparium, also known as New Zealand Tea Tree and commonly called Manuka, is a member of the Myrtaceae botanical family.  It is a bushy evergreen shrub with pink flowers that is native to New Zealand and Australia.  It is also well known to many as the plant from which bees collect nectar from the flowers to produce Manuka honey.  This honey is famous for its strong antibacterial properties.

Manuka essential oil has a unique aroma that is much different from the medicinal aroma of Tea Tree that it is often compared to.  Try blending with oils like Roman Chamomile, Copaiba, Marjoram, or Peppermint for a soothing massage after a long day on your feet.  Consider diffusing a little bit with Bergamot, Lemon, Douglas Fir, and Tea Tree for a clean, invigorating aroma to freshen the air.  Also, it may assist with the appearance of skin when properly diluted and applied topically and blends nicely with other oils like Lavender, Frankincense, Tea Tree, and Helichrysum.

Usage ideas:

  • Add a few drops of essential oils to a diffuser, cotton round, or a tissue.

  • Dilute to 1% in your choice of carrier oils to make a face serum or body oil.  Apply a small amount to damp skin after washing to help seal in moisture.

  • Add 5-15 drops to 1 oz. of your choice of carrier oils to make a massage oil.

  • Mix a few drops with an unscented liquid soap or bubble bath and add to the tub when filling.

For convenience on the go…

  • Properly dilute with your choice of carrier oils in a roller bottle.

  • Add up to a total of 15 drops of essential oils to a personal aromatic inhaler (aroma stick).
